Networking
Are you a good networker? If not it is time to start. Why? Well you never know when you will need a particular person with a particular skill to aid you in some way. That could be in a practical way or perhaps for an information need.
According to some, anyone you want to meet is only four to five people away from you! Lets face it most jobs are gained through networking, proving that the old adage of who you know and not always what you know aids you more when searching for a job.
The key to networking is simple, you need to introduce yourself to people at every opportunity. Introduce yourself to anyone, yes that includes complete strangers. During the course of the day there are numerous opportunities to network. As a rule of thumb if a person comes within 3 feet of you there is an opportunity for you to network.
Networking is a lot easier than most people think. All it takes is a small amount of effort on your part. When I first started to make a conscious decision to start networking it seemed daunting. Especially talking to complete strangers, but the more I did it the easier it became. Networking is not just a business activity it should be a personal activity as well. Anybody that you meet can be a resource for the future in some way. Most people like to talk, you just need to talk to them. I came up with a few stable topics that I would use to open a conversation. You can use anything even talking about the weather you just need to find something to break the ice.
A typical example. I was talking to a checkout operator at my local store, making an effort to network, she told me about a computer problem her son was having. I offered to take a look as I was in the industry and from the problem she described I knew it wasn't anything too serious. Initially she was a little taken aback, a person she had just met going to her house, but I assured her I was certain I could help and I didn't want anything in return. I gave her my business card and told her to give me a call if she wanted my assistance. She called the next day and I arranged to go around and found the problem was simple as I had expected, the display controller board was loose in the PC. I reseated the board and resolved the problem, while I was there talking I mentioned the problem I was having with my car. It turned out her brother was a car mechanic and she offered to ask him to take a look for me. I know next to nothing about cars so this was really hand, I though even if he couldn't find the problem he could at least point me in the right direction. He found the problem was the alternator, I purchased a new one, he fitted it for me and the problem was resolved. I had not offered to take a look at the computer problem with the view to getting my car fixed, that was a completely unexpected result but is a typical example of how networking can work in your favour from the most unusual sources, often when you least expect it.
People sometimes look down on others that are not in high powered positions. When they talk about networking they mean high powered executives at business seminars. I could of thought why waste time networking with a lowly checkout operator? If I had thought that way, then the problem with my car would probably not of been resolved at such a low price. There are sometimes hidden benefits that you don't realise at the time. If you have the mentality of networking just for personal gain your network will decrease rather than increase. People will just feel used. You must network with no ultimate gain in mind, instead if you network with a giving approach you will actually receive in abundance. It is true what they say, that givers get. So network with the idea of how you can help others and you will in effect be helping yourself.
Anybody and everybody is really worth having in your network and you should take time to foster relationships, to build your network. Think about it for a minute, on average most people tend to have around 250 contacts they know, in turn each of those 250 will have 250 and so on. As mentioned before you are probably only 4 to 5 people away from the person who could help you, with whatever you need help with.
Here are a few networking tips:-
-
Get some business cards. Even if you don't have a business of your own, they are great tools for networking. If you don't have a business just have your contact details on the cards. Either buy them or print them yourself but get some business cards and always keep a sufficient supply on your person at all times. Make a habit of giving people your card at every opportunity.
-
Always treat other peoples business cards with respect. In Japan they receive a business cards with both hands as an acknowledgement of its importance. Treat business cards with the respect they deserve.
-
When receiving business cards, use the back for making notes about that contact to make it easier for you to remember them.
-
Create your own introduction. Introduce yourself in a clear and concise way, try to make it memorable so that people don't forget you. "Greetings my name is Phoenix, I am a Magickal Practitioner that helps people Influence their own Destiny!"
-
Reintroduce yourself at every meeting rather than waiting for people to remember you. There is nothing worse than being in a situation where you know a person but can not remember their name. If everybody adopted this approach life would be a lot easier for everyone.
-
Really focus on a person when they do introduce themselves, so that it makes it easier for you to remember them.
-
When networking don't keep score. Do things for people without expecting something in return. Remember givers get in the long term, the more you give ultimately the more you will receive. Make that investment and give to others as much as possible without expecting a return.
-
Make time to send acknowledgements to people, even to people you don't know. For example, if you read a book and thoroughly enjoy it, send the author a letter or find their email address and send them a note to say how much you enjoyed their work. We often take for granted that these people know they are appreciated but it is often not the case.
- Have a system for recording contact information. A Rolodex, Address Book or Contact Management Software but find a system to keep the information secure. Make sure you keep it updated.
You can network with people you meet on the street, in shops, bars, at conferences, on the Internet, wherever. There are countless possibilities. Everybody that you meet is a networking opportunity. The benefits may not be obvious to you at the time but somewhere down the line you might need that person, or they might need you. View the whole world as one large network. The more your network grows the more you will grow as a person.

Ansuz - Signals

Rune Description = Signals;Messenger Rune; The God Loki; Mouth; Message; Trick
The first of the twelve Runes that make up the cycle of Self-Transformation. The underlying significance is on receiving messages, signals or gifts. Drawing this Rune indicates connection with the Divine is at hand. A gift of integrating conscious recognition with unconscious motive. If the messenger Rune brings to you sacred knowledge from the Divine then you are truly blessed. Messages received may be in a hidden format or somehow secret. It may take a better understanding of self in order to interpret the message being sent. Loki is associated with this Rune, the ancient trickster. What may appear as a trick, may actually be genuine or vice versa.

Reversed.
Drawing this Rune reversed signifies concern of what appears to be a failed communication, lack of clarity or awareness either in your past or in a present situation. Being one of the Runes of Self-Transformation, in other words a cycle Rune, could indicate a blockage in your path. This would be a time for clearing what is clogged in the self in order to obtain free movement. You need to be open within yourself in order to understand the messages that being sent. You may feel as though you are on a fruitless journey, only until you can accept what is offered will you be able to move forwards. Start to read the signals in order to achieve this.

Don was sometimes called a goddess, sometimes a god. Don was the Welsh equivalent of the Irish Danu. As a goddess she is said to be the daughter of Mathonwy, sister of Math, wife of Beli and Mother to Gwydion and Aranrhod. British Gods are sometimes described in three families 'Children of Don' being one. In Ireland Don, as a God, ruled over the Land of the Dead or the Otherworld.
