Speed-Reading

If there is one skill you should seriously consider it is Speed-Reading. Contrary to popular misunderstanding people who read fast also read better.  They have a better level of comprehension than those that read slowly.  No doubt at some point in your life you have been told to read something slowly and carefully so that you have a better understanding.  The reverse is actually true, if you read something slowly you are more likely to have a far lesser understanding at the end of it, and you will probably need to read the section through again and again in order to comprehend what you have read.

Most of us when we read are held back because as we read we 'speak' the words in our heads.  This form of subvocalisation is one of the main things that holds back our reading speed. It is possible through speed-reading to not have this type of inner speech but still be able to read and comprehend what we are reading.

An average speed-reader should be able to read about 1000 words per minute. Champion speed-readers can read anything up to 3800 words per minute with complete comprehension.

John F. Kennedy, late president of the USA, read at an average speed of 240 pages an hour. The average person reads no more than 60 pages an hour.  John F. Kennedy was not the only president to use speed-reading, Woodrow Wilson could read even faster and had a reputation of being able to read at the speed it takes to turn the pages in other words a 'Page Reader'.   Just a small example of two great men who understood the power of being able to read quickly, but also understood that with quicker reading came better comprehension.  Obviously both of these men did not become president just because they mastered the art of speed-reading but this extra skill certainly must have played a role in their climb to the top.

When I talk to to people about speed-reading, there is an initial barrier put up almost instantly. "I will not enjoy reading a novel fast, that will take away the enjoyment. I don't see the point of speed-reading?".  My answer is that once the art of speed-reading is learned, then it is up to you as to when you utilise that skill. If you are reading for pleasure then you may not want to speed-read, as with anything we always have a choice. I assure you though, once you mastered the art of speed-reading you will not look back and you will utilise it on regular basis.

A quick tip to improve you reading speed straight away is always use a guide.  Just as you did as a child when you started to learn to read and used your finger to follow the words on a line.  Do the same, but use a pen, letter opener or something else that is pointed with a tip. Using a guide focusses your eyes on what you are reading, if you don't use a guide your eyes wander all over the page and become distracted.  Using a guide will keep your eyes on track and improve your reading speed straight away.  If you doubt this, watch somebody's eyes while they are reading without a guide. You will see that contrary to what we believe our eyes to do, follow from left to right along one line and then move to the next, without a guide our eyes move all over the page, up down, right, left, almost in a completely random pattern. So improve your reading speed straight away by utilising a guide.

There are various Speed-Reading courses and books available.   I personally recommend a book by Tony Buzan called 'The Speed Reading Book'.

So make it personal goal to learn speed-reading, even if you don't think you need it at the moment. I assure you there will be times in your life when it will be a very useful skill.

Rune Reading Class Part 3 - Gebo

Gebo - Partnership

Rune Description = Partnership; Forgiveness; a gift; a talent.

Drawing Gebo is an indication that a union, uniting or partnership in some for is close at hand.  Gebo also warns of collapsing yourself into a partnership, you must take notice that for any union or partnership to work there needs to remain a separateness of identity even in unity.  This council applies at all levels, personal relationships, business relationships, in any form of partnering or uniting. Only ever enter into equal partnerships retaining your own identity and allowing others to retain theirs. Gebo has no reverse for it signifies the gift of freedom from which all other gifts flow.

Next Week: - Ansuz (Signals)

Action Plan for the week.

Consider learning the art of Speed-Reading, if you do not fancy Speed-Reading is there another skill that you could learn?  It might not be useful now but perhaps it will be useful later in life.

Latin word for the week. (Latin is very useful for reading old Magickal Texts)

Sapiens  = Wise

Myths and Deities

Boann (boo-an)/Boannan/Boyne = (Ireland) Water Goddess, Mother of Oenghus.

Boann was the mother of Oenghus by the Dagda. Boann gave, as a water goddess, her name to the River Boyne.  Formerly there was only a well, now called Trinity Well, shaded by nine magick hazel trees.  These trees bore crimson nuts said to bestow the knowledge of everything in the world to those who ate them.  Only the divine salmon ate the nuts as they fell from the trees into the well where the salmon lived. The gods had forbidden anyone to approach this place but Boann dared to disobey them. As she approached the sacred well, the waters rose up and drove her away in a rushing flood. She escaped and the waters made the river Boyne.

Magickal Dictionary

Solitary  - A Witch that practices alone and does not belong to a group.
